After 10+ years, internationally renowned educators and pioneers in Constitutional Facial Acupuncture, Mary Elizabeth Wakefield and MichelAngelo return to Brisbane and Sydney, Australia in September 2025, for the Constitutional Facial Acupuncture Seminar Series, Australia 2025, brought to you by Qiology.
After inspiring the acupuncture/Chinese medicine profession in Australia since 2008 with extensive trainings on Constitutional Facial Acupuncture methods,  our much loved presenters are returning to Australia to inspire and develop the newer generations of practitioners with a keen interest in Constitutional Facial Acupuncture. We also welcome those who have practiced Facial Acupuncture for many years but are wanting to refine, develop and update their current skillsets.

Facial Acupuncture is an essential skillset for the modern acupuncturist, not only for treating various conditions of the face (neurological, musculoskeletal, pain issues, TMJ issues, etc.), but it is used for positively influencing the condition of the facial landscape (muscles, skin, fascia, scars, wrinkles, acupuncture channels, etc.) for aesthetic purposes, and is a highly sought after form of treatment for patients/clients who have a focus on health and beauty. Further to this, the fascinating aspect of Facial Acupuncture is that it can powerfully influence the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our patients, as well as the constitution, having transformational effects on our clients on many levels. At the same time, when we treat the body on a constitutional level, we also have beneficial effects on the facial landscape through the distribution of the acupuncture channel network on the face. It is for this reason that Mary-Elizabeth Wakefield, over her 35+ years of clinical and teaching experience has developed protocols (The Wakefield Technique) that simultaneously influence the face, and deep levels of the constitution, to create the total holistic approach that is Constitutional Facial Acupuncture.

Mary Elizabeth has a vast curriculum with many modules that she has developed over her decades of teaching experience, however has selected 2 extremely important modules to offer during this visit to Australia, which form the foundations of her system of Constitutional Facial Acupuncture. Mary Elizabeth Wakefield, L. Ac., M. S., M. M., is the internationally recognized author of the book, Constitutional Facial Acupuncture (Elsevier UK, 2014).  She is an acclaimed teacher, an acupuncturist, an herbalist, Acutonics® and Zen Shiatsu practitioner, cranio-sacral therapist and a professional opera singer.  Mary Elizabeth is acknowledged to be a leading international authority on facial acupuncture, and has created innovative treatment protocols that emphasize a constitutional approach to this modality, as well as some 22 educational seminars that present her unique philosophy and treatment protocols.  For her contributions as a teacher, author and practitioner of her own system of facial acupuncture, Mary Elizabeth was selected for the prestigious publication Marquis Who’s Who in America in February of 2025.

An opera singer, classical composer, pianist, astrologer, healer, diviner and writer, MichelAngelo has begun to make his mark on the international astrological community through his original essays.  He is a regular guest on fellow astrologer/musician David Bolton’s podcast, “The Path of Socrates,” discussing current events and topics of astrological interest.  He also appeared regularly as a guest musical expert on the Jupiter Rising astrological podcast with his colleague Eileen Grimes

In spring 2019, he published his first compilation, entitled Random Ramblings of an Astrological Autodidact, in both paperback and e-book format; it was very favourably reviewed by Mary Plumb in the Mar/Apr 2020 issue of The Mountain Astrologer, and has received several 5-star reviews on Amazon. A second volume, Miscellaneous Maunderings about the Starry Sky, was published in October 2019, also to 5-star reviews. This seminar focuses on Advanced facial acupuncture protocols, such as: Japanese scar therapy, intra-dermal needling, threading, needle depth and insertion, “wrapping around the bone” techniques, as well as comprehensive work with facial muscles and motor points, all focused on the methods of Constitutional Facial Acupuncture Renewal for cosmetic acupuncture treatments and more.
These protocols are effective for Facial Renewal, but can also be used for syndromes such as Bell’s palsy, wind-stroke, facial paralysis and TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction).

It should also be understood that by treating the face we also create profound healing effects on the body on a constitutional level, just as treating the body constitutionally has an effect that will be radiated through the face. In comparison to the Advanced Constitutional Facial Acupuncture module, this course differers in its approach to addressing both sides of this equation.

In this three-day seminar you will learn the following new materials (not in the book!) all focused on the methods of Constitutional Facial Acupuncture Renewal for cosmetic acupuncture treatments and more.

  • How to treat 12 problematic areas of the facial landscape with gentle origin/insertion muscle techniques;
  • 3 levels of constitutional treatment:
  1. The Jing: the Eight Extraordinary meridians, and how they affect the endocrine system.
    – Unique!! How each stage of every Eight Extraordinary meridian pathway relates to a TCM pattern, a syndrome, a specific emotion and type of facial imbalance
  2. The Ying: the 12 Regular meridians are integrated with the Five Phases and their complementary Yin and Yang pairs

The author has created a modular program for practitioner certification in Constitutional Facial Acupuncture. This book supports the program, and can be used as a self-contained course in the skills covered. Constitutional Facial Acupuncture is a safe, painless and effective treatment for renewing the face and the body. Fine lines may be entirely erased, deep lines reduced and bags around the neck and eyes firmed.

This protocol is based upon the use of acu-muscle points and Wakefield explains in detail how to use these specially selected acupuncture points in tandem with muscle structure. The constitutional underpins this approach to facial acupuncture needling – every patient is treated according to their specific constitutional pattern. Facial acupuncture differs from cosmetic acupuncture in this way. According to Chinese physiognomy, the shape of the face, its colouration and its wrinkles are representative of the balance or imbalance of the organ systems and the emotional core of the patient.

Fine needles are placed at a variety of acupuncture points on the face, neck and around the eyes to simulate the body’s natural energies (qi). Since muscle groups are addressed as well as acupuncture points, the face lifts itself, via the acupuncture points, through the muscles’ toning and tightening action. The needles also stimulate blood and circulation, improving facial colour.

The book will introduce a complete facial and recommended constitutional treatment protocol including needling instructions, charts and photos that will clarify the details of the treatments. A full topical Chinese herbal treatment for the face that can be integrated with facial needling to achieve more impressive results will also be included. Benefits, contraindications, recommended treatment duration and frequency, short and long-term effects, maintenance treatments, managing patient expectations will all be covered. The protocols covered will be complete in and of themselves, and will provide practitioners with information sufficient.
